Spilled Water Never Returns
2021, Canada, 6 minutes, Animation
Writer / Director / Animator: Anthony Kit Chun Lee
Narration: Howard Dai
Actor: Garvin Chan, Anthony Lee
Through “Spilled Water Never Returns”, Anthony Lee revisits some memories of fading friendships. At the beginning of the film, the main character suffers from gum bleeding because of the size of his maxilla. Thus he is reminded of an old friend of his, who is a medical consultant. Yet, the conversation is awkward when he tries to reach out to this friend. Using monologues and first-person perspective, the main character starts reminiscing about what he experienced with some old friends of his while they were still close friends — including personal hardships, random things, political movements, etc. Except for monologues, a variety of background designs and musical effects are also used in the storytelling. The movie name “Spilled Water Never Returns”, a Chinese idiom, means that you can’t go back in time. This might also imply that some friendships are not going back to the way they were, like spilled water.
